Bulgaria’s threatened butterfly fauna and their conservation

Bulgaria’s rich butterfly fauna, which includes many European Red List species, is increasingly under threat due to the loss of traditional farming practices, and human developments.

Biography:

Mr J Nick Greatorex-Davies worked as a professional Lepidopterist based at CEH Monks Wood for 34 years and was co-ordinator of the Butterfly Monitoring Scheme for 12 years. He has also led BBFS butterfly tours to Bulgaria since 2003.

Format of the talk:

– An overview of Bulgaria’s butterfly fauna and their habitats setting this in the context
of the rest of Europe.

– The current state of knowledge of the distribution of Bulgaria’s butterfly fauna.

– An evaluation of the current threats to Bulgaria’s butterflies and their habitats.

– A summary of the conservation measures in place to try and protect these butterflies,
an assessment of their effectiveness, and a brief look at what opportunities there
might be to improve on these conservation measures.

– The talk, using PowerPoint, will contain a good selection of photographs of both
butterflies and their habitats taken by the speaker.
