The HPO Ensemble brings together five of the Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra’s leading players, including three Bulgarian-born musicians – clarinettist Boyan Ivanov, violinist Emil Chakalov and cellist Yoanna Prodanova. Boyan Ivanov is enjoying holding the positions Principal Clarinet and Orchestra Manager of HPO for six seasons, since the orchestra’s concert debut in the autumn of 2016; Emil Chakalov was appointed HPO Leader in 2019 and currently is the Concertmaster of the orchestra for third season; Yoanna Prodanova played with the orchestra for first time last season and since then is a regular Guest Leader of the HPO Cello section. The three Bulgarian musicians are delighted to be joined by two other regular HPO members – the Polish violinist Romana Szczepaniak and Spanish violist Jordi Morell.
Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra (HPO) is a dynamic international world-class symphony orchestra for the flourishing South East, led by Artistic Director Marcio da Silva. HPO is the first fully professional orchestra in Hastings since the 1930s when the Hastings Municipal Orchestra was based at the White Rock Theatre, then a major national centre for classical music. For this reason, when the orchestra had their debut in the autumn of 2016 – performing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Hastings Philharmonic Choir – they chose the White Rock Theatre as their opening venue. Many great names of the classical music world came to Hastings back in the 1930s: renowned conductors Sir Henry Wood, Sir Adrian Boult, Sir Thomas Beecham and Sir John Barbirolli; and many brilliant soloists, including Sergei Rachmaninov (in 1935 and 1936), Vladimir Horowitz and Arthur Rubinstein, and the Spanish cellist Pablo Casals. In founding a new professional orchestra in Hastings, the artistic director and principal conductor of Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra, Marcio da Silva, set himself the challenge of putting Hastings back on the map as a centre of excellence for classical music – one that will be recognised both nationally and internationally. In the years that have passed since their first concert, HPO have developed a loyal and highly appreciative audience who relish their vibrant and energetic playing. Before the onset of Covid-19, their audiences took great pleasure in attending concerts in the unique and intimate atmosphere of the historic St Mary in the Castle, and Christchurch St Leonards-on-Sea generously hosted many Covid-secure concerts for them during the pandemic. Currently HPO is in their sixth season, a season which includes a special focus on the heritage of the orchestra. To celebrate this the orchestra is delighted to announce that its new home will be the White Rock Theatre – a return to the roots of the original professional orchestra founded in Hastings in the early twentieth century.
