Bulgarias rich butterfly fauna, which includes many European Red List species, is increasingly under threat due to the loss of traditional farming practices, and human developments.
Biography:
Mr J Nick Greatorex-Davies worked as a professional Lepidopterist based at CEH Monks Wood for 34 years and was co-ordinator of the Butterfly Monitoring Scheme for 12 years. He has also led BBFS butterfly tours to Bulgaria since 2003.
Format of the talk:
– An overview of Bulgarias butterfly fauna and their habitats setting this in the context
of the rest of Europe.
– The current state of knowledge of the distribution of Bulgarias butterfly fauna.
– An evaluation of the current threats to Bulgarias butterflies and their habitats.
– A summary of the conservation measures in place to try and protect these butterflies,
an assessment of their effectiveness, and a brief look at what opportunities there
might be to improve on these conservation measures.
– The talk, using PowerPoint, will contain a good selection of photographs of both
butterflies and their habitats taken by the speaker.
