Welcome on 11.12.2021, from 17:00, live, in the “Sofia” Gallery.
The Shum Monastery is not among the most famous in the Godech region, but its history is curious. It is located on the land of the village of Shuma, hidden at the foot of the mountain Chepan, near the village of Lopushna and therefore is honestly called Lopushanski.
“Information about the time of origin of the Shum Monastery is extremely scarce, and its history is shrouded in legend.”
– Metodi Todorov, PR of the Municipality of Godech.
Around 1860, the people of the Reketo neighborhood grazed their animals in the area where the holy monastery is located today. One day a local boy, passing by with his herd, falls into a special state and starts shouting: “Come, people. There is a holy place here, come and find the monastery.”
The clearing reveals the foundations of a large church, on the foundations of which today’s church was built. The construction of the church lasted from 1861 to 1863, and its consecration was made in 1864. Later, other buildings were built next to the church – residential and commercial.
Another legend says that 200-300 years ago the village of Shuma moved to different places. Initially it was in the area of Bolina Padina, and then in the area of Staro Selo.
Then a plague broke out and people began to die. Legend has it that those who came down to drink water from the monastery spring survived and left the old settlement, which today is called Bolina Padina – due to illness.
In 1978 the Forest Monastery “St. Archangel Michael ”has been declared a cultural monument of artistic significance at the local level.
“Next to the church there is a living oak tree more than 400 years old. The interior of the church is painted with the typical 16th-17th century painting. Christ, the Last Judgment, the holy horsemen George and Dimitar and the patron saint of the church are depicted,” Metodi Todorov concluded. , PR of Godech municipality.
