ONLINE: The “Surva” Festival
Dear friends,
This Thursday, July 21, 2022, from 18:00 BST, we have the pleasure to present you the masquerade traditions of the renowned “Surva” Festival, which took place at Sofia’s “Borisova Gradina” Park Theatre. Performers were there to represent the imaginative beauty of folklore and the specific colorful traditions of Pernik and its adjacent villages. The “Surva” Festival is recognized as Bulgaia’s own living human treasure, and is now part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Six groups of kukeri marched along the Borisova Gradina Walk of Fame.
What is the “Surva” custom, why does it carry that name, where does it come from and how is it alive to this day? These questions and more will be answered by Dr. Milena Lyubenova from the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum at BAS.
