About Sylvia Mann:
Whilst studying at the Royal Academy of music, Sylvia won the coveted Madame Suggia Award giving her the loan of a beautiful Forster cello for the early part of her career. After bringing up her 2 sons her step back on to the London music scene saw Sylvia as Principal Cellist for the BBC Radio Orchestra where she broadcast solos with the orchestra on a daily basis.
In the 1990’s Sylvia became Principal Cellist for The Virtuosi of London, touring Italy, Norway and France and performing at the Royal Festival Hall, The Royal Albert Hall, The Barbican, St. Martin in the Fields and other major London concert venues.
As a freelance orchestral player over the years, Sylvia made numerous commercial recordings and enjoyed performing with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The Britten Sinfonia and The English Chamber Orchestra.
With many years of teaching experience and with pupils entering the London music conservatoires, Sylvia has made teaching an important part of her profession leading her to write a book on cello technique. This was well reviewed by the European String Teachers’ Association which led to being commissioned to write a follow up advanced version.
Sylvia now teaches for the Junior Guildhall School of Music String Training Scheme.
Tonight Sylvia performs on a cello made in Paris by J. B. Salomon in 1728.
